Rhodes is the largest island in the Dodecanese and the fourth largest island in the Aegean and Greece and is located at the crossroads of two major sea routes of the Mediterranean between the Aegean Sea and the coast of the Middle East as well as Cyprus and Egypt. The city of Rhodes is the capital of the homonymous island and the prefecture of Dodecanese. The island has an area of 1398 square kilometers and a permanent population of 117,007 inhabitants (2001).
One of the major attractions is the medieval city of Rhodes, which is World Heritage listed and the corresponding list of UNESCO. It is the largest and best preserved fortified city in Europe with many Hellenistic, Byzantine, medieval and Ottoman monuments. Even the Kalithea, the antiquities of Ialyssos, in Monte Smith of Kameirou, the Acropolis of Lindos all reveal the rich history of the island. Inland, one comes across the verdant valley of the Butterflies, a magical valley, full of lush greenery and streams with running water and countless butterflies in the summer flooding the area and offer a unique spectacle.
The island is situated in the Aegean University, composed of the Department of Education, the Department of Early Childhood Educational Planning and the Department of Mediterranean Studies. The most important religious festivals are the pilgrimage to Panagia Kremasti (first fortnight of August) with rich cultural events, Panagia Tsampikas (8 / 9), Saint Soulas (late July), the Virgin Mary in the village Skiadenis Mesanagros (Lazarus Saturday - Sunday Thomas) with a litany of image becomes a ritual way of Virgin Ypsenis in Lardos.
